FAQ

What is UVI?

The UV Index is an international standard measurement of how strong the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is getting through the ozone and atmospheric conditions such as clouds and smog. The UV Index provides a daily forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun by predicting UV intensity levels on a scale of 1 to 11+, where 1 indicates a low risk of overexposure and 11+ signifies an extreme risk.

Calculated on a next-day basis for every ZIP Code across the United States, the UV Index takes into account clouds and other local conditions that affect the amount of UV radiation reaching the ground in different parts of the country.

More information can be found here and an explanation of how it is calculated can be found here.

Your SunFriend® will tell you what the UVI exactly where you are when you point it directly at the sun, hold for 8 seconds and push the UVI button.

Is there another resource for finding the UVI for my ZIP code if I don’t have a SunFriend®?

The EPA has a good resource for looking up your local UV Index.

How do I know what sensitivity level my skin is?

Guides to skin sensitivity settings for your SunFriend© can be found on our product instructions page.  Just remember: lower numbers are for more sensitive skin types, and when in doubt, start low!

Can my kids use SunFriend®?

We recommend that children under the age of 12 only use SunFriend with close adult supervision. It will typically be more beneficial to have an adult set the sensitivity and monitor the alerts for a child.

Is the UVA+B SunFriend® patented technology?

Our U.S. patent application was filed in June 2011.

Should I wear the SunFriend© with sunscreen?

The UVA+B SunFriend™ is another safer-sun tool, like sun protective clothing, broad-spectrum sunscreens, hats, sunglasses, etc. It is not specifically designed to be used with sunscreens. However, we recommend you use your own best judgment and take the precautions you feel would protect you from over-exposure to the sun.

Considerations in favor of not combining SunFriend© measurements with sunscreen:
According to some research, you cannot manufacture vital vitamin D if you are wearing sunscreen.
According to some research, any chemicals you put on your skin go directly into your bloodstream
According to the FDA, no sunscreens are truly waterproof

Can I use SunFriend® in a tanning bed?

At this time, SunFriend© is NOT recommended for tanning beds and booths. Due to the frequency of UV transmittal in tanning beds and UV lamps, UVA+B SunFriend should not be used to determine your safe daily exposure when using these devices. UVA+B SunFriend® is programmed to read UV from natural sources like sunlight and reflective surfaces such as snow, sand and water.
